Avoid tourist traps

Unfortunately, there are some tourist traps in Prague you should be aware of:

  1. Money exchange: Always ask in advance, how much will you get before signing anything. Avoid exchange places at the Airport or Main train station, they have typically a very bad rate (up to 15 CZK/EUR – nominal rate is 26 CZK/EUR) and/or ridiculous commission up to 35 per cent. Well known honest place is Exchange.cz. Major debit/credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere so you don't need much cash anyway. In case of ATM withdrawals, make sure you don't withdraw too much (1000 CZK/day is more than enough) and always opt out of currency conversion inside the ATM (your bank will always give you a better rate).
  2. Taxi crooks: Avoid using taxis parked at the main station or other frequent tourist places. Use an app like Liftago, Green-Prague, or even Uber. When using Taxi, the price is capped by the municipal government to 28 CZK (cca. 1.1 EUR) per km with the boarding fee of 40 CZK (cca. 1.5 EUR). The driver is obligated to give you printed receipt. If something goes wrong, don't pay and call the police (phone number 158) directly from the car. Don't accept hand-written receipts.

Be sure to watch Honest Prague Guide to get to know where to go and what to do in Prague. Even Czech people watch it!
